If you’re a lover of the lake you likely have some kind of d©cor to reflect just how much you appreciate the beauty and serenity of the water.

Lots of those little ornate jewels can easily be handmade even if you don’t consider yourself to be particularly creative. And since it’s the holiday season why not make some, not just for yourself but also for friends and family who love the lake as much as you do?

It’s not as hard as you might think. Following are a few great ideas to get you in the Christmas spirit:

• Glass or plastic hanging ornaments. Simply purchase some clear glass or plastic balls with open ends (complete with the little caps). Next find some of your most colorful fishing lures and place it inside the orb. Use a bit of hot glue once you have it placed where you like it and replace the cap. Get some fishing line to make a loop and if you don’t have the little hangers, simple grab some paper clips. Slip one end of clip on the fishing line and the other can be used to hang the ornament from your tree. You can also scoop up some sand and put it inside the ornament.
• Wooden ornaments. If you’re really into arts and crafts you may be the type who can grab some wood and cut it into shapes. If you’re not, you can simply buy some wooden discs and a little paint. Not an artist? Don’t worry. You can simply paint the ornament red, green, whatever you choose and then with some black paint (or even a marker that works on paint) and write whatever you choose. Maybe something like “Lovin’ Lake Life, or “Gone Fishin.
• Driftwood ornaments. If you find some great pieces of driftwood on the shoreline, let it dry out and you can make some cool ornaments with it. You can cut the driftwood and sand it and make it look like nautical piling. Pick up a little boat, fish or flip flop charm and tie it around a few pieces of the driftwood with red and green twine.
• Dough ornaments. Buy ready-made dough and add flour until it’s smooth to make the dough denser. Roll the dough out and grab your cookie cutters that are shaped like boats, fish, oars, etc. Make holes in the top, and then chill the cut dough before baking it. Once they’re done you can add red and/or green icing if you like, along with some festive twine and voila, you have a great ornament.
• Scrabble ornaments. This one is simple. Decide what you’d like your ornament to say, maybe something like “Live, Love, Lake and then glue the letters together. Glue the three words together and attach a red and green string to the back so it can be hung from the tree.

None of these ideas will take a lot of time so get started on your lake-inspired ornaments. It’s a great way to add some of your lake loving personality to the Christmas tree!
