Boating season is right around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited. Here at Boat Club we often encounter folks who are initially intimidated at the idea of boating. So many people would love to get out on the water and take their kids on adventures, but feel ill-equipped when it comes to operating a vessel, and overall boater safety. Especially on your own, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out all the ins and outs of operating a boat and taking care of one. This month happens to be Boaters Safety Month so we have provided a few resources and answers to frequently asked questions on this topic.
Here in East Tennessee we have some beautiful lakes, which naturally means lots of people interested in boating. So why is boater safety instruction important? According to the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC), 75% of boating accidents occurs when the operator of the boat had no boating safety instruction. In order to avoid this we should make sure we are educated before we get behind the throttle!
Many people wonder if Tennessee requires a license/ boater safety certification and the answer is yes. In Tennessee, if you were born after January 1, 1989 you must have a license in order to operate a boat. However, it is strongly suggested you get licensed even if you were born before this date. Those required by age to get their license may go to testing centers such as the local public library to be proctored, much like the process of getting a learner’s driving permit. Those who are not required by age but would like to obtain a license can find free online instruction at Safe Boating Council. They say, “Whether you are a novice boater or a trainer, a paddler or power boater, we have the educational options you need to increase your skills and knowledge.” This website is a great way to increase your knowledge of on the water safety. If you want to get a license and were born before January 1, 1989 you can visit Boat-Ed and earn your certification in three easy steps.
In addition to licensure, it is beneficial to get in person, on-the-water training to become very comfortable operating your vessel.
